experiments, occasionally explosive

2013 Γ

My 3rd beer of 2013 is a Northern English Brown (BJCP 11C) ale, Austin Homebrew’s London Calling.

I brewed with a partial mash recipe and came in a little short of the expected OG, probably because of my XL brew kettle and jet burner.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Crystal 90L Malt
  • 2.5 lb Pale Ale Malt
  • 5 lb Extra Pale Extract
  • 0.5 oz Nugget (Boil)
  • 0.25 oz Nugget (Flavor)
  • 0.25 oz Nugget (Aroma)
  • White Labs 005 British Ale

Progress

Brew day went normally. My measured OG was 1.046, lower than the expected 1.054. However, my FG (at transfer to secondary) was 1.008, so the yeast at least performed as expected. This brew left a surprising amount of material in the primary fermenter. I need to figure out a workable strainer, since I didn’t strain most of the wort when pouring from the kettle.
